“Each of us, influenced perhaps by one ideology or another, generates our own plot, our own symbolic landscape, a highly individual configuration . . . through which we view our own experience and which I call a personal mythology.”

Is Any Body Home?

Reclaiming your body as you age is not about losing extra pounds, exercising to exhaustion, or affirming that “Big is beautiful.” A beautiful body is one that is inhabited, regardless of the size. When you dwell in your body, you reclaim that very personal space from the patriarchy. Is any body home in your body or are the lights out? In this roundtable, Carolyn will share the story of coming home to her own body at age 53 and the “inner diet” that resulted in lost weight, resolution of a health issue and, most importantly, a new kind of power—embodied—women of all ages can embrace.

Sex and the City

The popular TV series about four women who hop from bed to bed poses multiple questions about what makes a couple a couple. In this roundtable, Carolyn will introduce some concepts about the work of relationship as “the project of growing up,” as noted by James Hollis, a Jungian analyst, and offer, by way of personal stories, what she learned from her own travels. What do the relationships in your life say about you? Here, you’ll be invited to answer that question.

Lost In Transitions

Life passages such as a parent’s death, an empty nest, divorce, retirement, health issues or a general spiritual angst demand you face your mortality. All carry with them an undertow of grief buoyed, often, by a lifetime of unacknowledged loss. But transitions also hide, within their folds, the stuff of mystery and magic. Indeed, they are the “Calls to Adventure” heroes of all times have answered. Here, Carolyn will share how she got lost in the tunnel of transitions, and found, at the end of it, the best years of her life. Life is, indeed, a “do-over” and in this roundtable, you’ll learn how.

Living an Authentic Life

Pop psychologists have often oversimplified the road to authenticity, suggesting you merely say affirmations or take up childhood activities. But authenticity is a loaded word and requires a deeper exploration. It is buried under layers of stories—your own, your family’s and ancestors’, and the larger culture’s. The task, then, becomes to unearth and embellish who you are, rather than who others want you to be. That is a courageous task. It is also a redemptive one. Here, Carolyn will explain authenticity via stories, share some of her journey to it, and show you how to unearth the intrinsic qualities that make you, well, you!

Toppling Your Personal Patriarchy

You can educate yourself on women’s history and politics, and talk vehemently in public and private about the abuses visited on you; however, until you extricate the cultural belief systems grounded in your body and passed down to you through the tribes of race, class, gender, religion and family, you can never be completely free, nor change society for those you love. In this session, Carolyn, as feminist and writer, will share the story that led her to topple her own personal patriarchy and share ideas for making your own personal life a political act.

Beware of the Muggles!

In the Harry Potter series, a muggle is defined as a person who lives life on a treadmill and doesn’t find much joy in it. She believes that “life is a bitch and then you die.” But it doesn’t have to be that way. It all comes down to what you believe is possible, and what you are unwilling to accept from the current muggle culture. (Indeed, once upon a time, cultures existed that believed people were magical beings!) In this session, Carolyn will share her own muggle-to-magic travels, introduce the idea of a “magic account,” and suggest ways to invest in your own bright future.

The Gifts of Illness

The body has a wisdom all its own and when you ignore it, or fail to understand it, it will demand your attention through chronic health issues and major illnesses. Its goal? To tell you that something is terribly wrong in your psychic life and it is time, now, to attend to it. Is a health challenge tugging at your psychic arm? In this session, Carolyn will suggest ways to read your own body’s challenges for the wisdom they contain. She will also share her own “body conversations” and the gifts of illness that came from them.
